Icchey Gaon Activities

Apart from enjoying the panoramic view of Kanchenjungha and its changing colours during sunrise and sunset, Icchey Gaon is ideal to savour a pine forest trek, do some bird watching and take a long village walk. If you are an adventure seeker, then you can go for paragliding to nearby Delo. You can keep aside a day for local sightseeing to close by destinations like Kalimpong, Lava, Loleygaon, Reshikhola and Sillery Gaon.

Birdwatching

We regularly host bird watchers as our guests who often stay back for weeks recording bird calls, taking photos and sketching birds. In our village and surrounding areas, you would find all types of birds like Partridges, Doves, Swifts, Cuckoos, Buzzards, Eagles, Owls, Hoopoes, Woodpeckers, Berbets, Minivets, Babblers, Drongos, Sunbirds and many more. We are still not sure, but the bird watchers visiting here often put the estimates at around 250 or more species.

PINE FOREST TREK

You can enjoy a short trek of about 2.5 kms through the Pine Forest from Icchey Gaon to Ramitey Dara View Point. From this View Point, you can get one of the longest views of River Teesta and Mt. Kanchenjungha towering over it. A few more kilometers of trek would take you to nearby Sillery Gaon.

Village Walks

Although our village is merely 50 odd houses and few cowsheds, kitchen gardens and flower beds but you can still catch a glimpse of traditional life here. As most of the village has been carved out from the forest, so we do not have much farmland but we can show you how to sow seeds and grow vegetables in green houses. We also do a bit of bee keeping. In the mornings, you can join me for a walk to the village cattleman’s house to get the fresh milk too.

Excellent service, praiseworthy hospitality, magnificent view and friendly people. The short trek from Eccheygaon to Sillerygaon, with the best guide Mr. D. K. Khawas, was the most memorable thing of our entire trip.

It was getting close to 3:00 o'clock. In the evening when we arrived at the homestay, and it was becoming dark. All we could see that night were the many lights emanating from residences and hotels perched on far-off hills; we had no idea what the morrow would bring. The adage "a picture is worth a thousand words" is true, but believe me when I tell that the vista this homestay affords cannot be adequately described by any number of beautiful photographs or words. Their balcony and roof have AMAZING morning views with a beautiful sky. Since you have to travel a few stairs to get to the homestay, steps might unfortunately be a bit of an issue for the elderly. However, Mr. D. K. Khawas will make the appropriate preparations if you let him know about it. Mr. Khawas and Hari Chacha exhibit the finest level of hospitality in both their conduct and their service.
